The History

A magnificent Victorian home built in the 1870’s, originally known as West Dene. The property was later purchased in 1904 by John Upson, a prominent and wealthy boot manufacturer in Hastings. He undertook extensive renovation and expansive building works during this time. One of the painters he employed was Robert Tressel who published his famous working class novel The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists in 1914 based on his experience of working on West Dean. The property (a 12-bedroom mansion) was divided into 2 houses in 1922. Number 14 facing south, and number 16 facing north. Since it was built it has only been on the market a handful of times. The current owners have lived here for 14 years. The previous owners spent over 40 years living at number 14, now known as Southdene.
